1946 - 1989
Founded in London just after the Second World War, the company moved to Albury, Surrey, in 1946. In 1967 the company became Albury Laboratories Ltd. In 1989 the business was sold to AMTAC Laboratories.
1989 - 1992
AMTAC moved the company to Cranleigh, Surrey in 1990 and in 1992 sold the business to Inchcape plc who integrated the laboratory into its Testing Services Division.
1996
Inchcape sold the Testing Services division for £380 million to Charterhouse, the venture capitalists.
1997
A new corporate identity - Intertek Testing Services
The transition from Inchcape became complete with the introduction of a new corporate identity - Intertek Testing Services (ITS).
1999
ITS acquired ERA Technology’s safety and EMC testing business.
ITS takes a positive step forward in its strategy to become the UK’s leading electrotechnical product testing and certification business.
2001
A new brand name
ETL SEMKO brand was adopted as the trading name of the worldwide electrotechnical and building products division of Intertek Testing Services
DTI minister, Lord Sainsbury, opens UK’s largest independent EMC Test Centre at ETL SEMKO UK
ETL SEMKO UK expands its EMC testing capabilities into the industrial, commercial, domestic, avionic, military, telecommunications and vehicular testing sectors and is unique in being able to satisfy the needs of manufacturers of large and specialised equipment.
ETL SEMKO UK achieves Investor in People Award
The process was implemented as the way to reduce costs, to help staff performance and to drive productivity, quality and customer satisfaction.
2002
ETL SEMKO’s parent company, Intertek Testing Services, floats on London Stock Exchange
ETL SEMKO continues to pursue its objective of establishing itself as the global leader in the markets in which it serves.
ETL SEMKO becomes new owner of Consumers’ Association’s Research & Testing Centre.
As well as incorporating additional skilled and experienced people into the ETL SEMKO UK team, the acquisition expands ETL SEMKO’s performance capabilities for its customers.
2003
Intertek Testing Services (ITS) shortens its name to Intertek Group plc, redesigns its logo and replaces ITS with the Intertek brand
Intertek is promoted as the primary brand throughout the Intertek Group and will be be communicated consistently in order to generate value in the name, brand and company for the benefit of customers.
2007
Intertek purchases ASTA BEAB, adding the ASTA Diamond and BEAB Approved Mark to their extensive portfolio of certification marks.
