There are two approval systems for materials which come into contact with potable water in the UK, that help to ensure that our water is fit to drink.
Downstream
Materials used ‘downstream’, or on the consumer side of the domestic stopcock must comply with The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and can be approved under the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) by testing to the requirements of BS6920. It is illegal to use products that do not comply
Upstream
The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) ensures all products used ‘upstream’ in the public water distribution system meet the requirements of Regulation 31 of the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000. Only WRAS approved materials can be submitted for DWI approval. These may then be subjected to additional testing as determined by the Committee on Products & Processes for use in Public Water Supply (CPP), an expert body which provides advice to the DWI.
